Healing With Color

The Metaphysics of Color (originally printed in The Fort Fairfield Journal)

Like all things, colors are made of energy and have their own energy frequency which can be used for healing. Color is light and on our planet, light is life. "Color is the medium through which we perceive light, and are affected by it." They touch us and heal us emotionally, physically, mentally and spiritually. Some colors are cool while others are warm. Some soothe while others invigorate. Color affects everything, all glands, moods, organs, chakras, the aura and energy systems. Maintaining the proper balance of color in your life helps you to remain in alignment with your wellbeing.

We tend to be drawn to the colors we most need. Take for instance when you pick out an oufit the night before, you are basing your choice on your energy state at that time (maybe tired, agitated, worried, wanting to make a good impression so you put more logical thinking into what would be appropriate). However, in the morning you wake refreshed and well rested and balanced. Often you find the outfit picked out the night before is no longer what you want to wear, it may feel heavier, drab or too dark than what you feel like wearing that morning.

"Color can be used to alter our physical, emotional, mental and spiritual conditions." Ted Andrews.

The use of color goes back to ancient times of human existence, used in riturals and shamanism (healing and divination). Colors on insects can indicate whether they are poisonous or not, same with plants. Cave paintings from the earliest times show a predominant use of the colors red, black and white. Red has a tremendous power in its associate with danger and is the color of blood and fire. It also indicates life force and vitality. Red coloring had been harvested from red ochre, plants and insects. Black was often used in reference to death and negativity. Did you ever hesitate when a black cat crossed your path? From long ago they were associated with bad luck and thought to be the familiars of evil witches. It is used today to absorb negative energies. White would indicate new life, purity and Spirit. When civilization began cultivating crops and growing their food along with hunting and gathering, the greening of the land indicated a time for planting. As food grew and crops of corn and wheat were harvested the colors green and yellow came to symbolize a good harvest and thus money and success. Egyptians used color and light in their healing temples. They used color in ointmens,, made from the grinding of colored crystals and mixing them with fats and or waxes. These ointments would then be applied to the areas of a person's body, that needed healing.

Whenever we see color or light, there is a biochemical reaction in our cells, via
hormones that affect our moods and emotions, our physical wellbeing and
behaviors. When color enters the opticalsystem it can produce melatonin, which regulates our sleep patterns and mood swings determining whether we are excited and alert or melancholy and sleepy.
